When Steve Ells worked as a line cook in San Francisco, he noticed that burritos were very popular in the area. He was inspired by these Mission-style burritos. After much thought, Steve decided to open a fast-casual restaurant in Denver.
In 1993, Steve Ells opened the first Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant in Denver, Colorado. To open this restaurant, he took an $85,000 loan from his father.
To make this restaurant profitable, they needed to sell 107 burritos per day. This milestone was achieved within a month. By the end of the first month, the company was selling more than 1,000 burritos per day.
In 1995, Chipotle opened a second store, and plans were made to expand the restaurants.
In 1998, the first restaurant outside of Colorado opened in Kansas City, Missouri. After that, the restaurant chain started expanding to other cities in the United States.
In 1998, McDonald’s Corporation acquired some of Chipotle’s shares, after which the chain began to expand rapidly. By 2005, the company had opened restaurants in more than 500 locations across the United States.
In 2006, McDonald’s sold its stake in the company and completely separated from the restaurant chain.
