History of Chipotle Mexican Grill
When Steve Ells worked as a line cook in San Francisco, Ells noticed that burritos were very popular in the area. He was very inspired by these Mission-style burritos. After much thought, Steve decided to open a fast-casual restaurant in Denver.
In 1993, Steve Ells opened the first Chipotle Mexican Grill Restaurant in Denver, Colorado. To open this restaurant, he took a $85,000 loan from his father.
To make this restaurant profitable, there was a need to sell 107 burritos per day. But this milestone was achieved by this restaurant within a month. Only after a month, this company started selling more than 1000 burritos per day.
In 1995, Chipotle opened a second store. Business plans were also made to expand the restaurants.
In 1998, the first restaurant outside of Colorado was opened in Kansas City, Missouri. After this, this food restaurant chain started expanding in other cities of the United States as well.
In 1998, McDonald’s Corporation acquired some of Chipotle’s shares. After which this chain started expanding rapidly. Seeing this, by 2005, restaurants had been opened at more than 500 locations across the United States of this company.
In 2006, McDonald’s sold the stake invested in this company. After which McDonald’s completely separated from this restaurant chain.
