How Mary Grace Started? (History)
Mary Grace Dimacali loved creating something new with dough since childhood. She carried on the same hobby into motherhood. Whenever it was her children’s birthdays, she would make personally decorated cakes for them.
She baked cookies and pastries as gifts for family and friends during the Christmas season. Mary’s fruitcakes became a holiday bestseller. Also, making cakes from scratch for her children’s birthdays was a skill she sharpened by taking a 12-month baking course in Los Angeles, California.
Mary Grace wanted to create something Filipino with the familiar local taste of pastry. So, she worked to perfect the texture and flavor of ensaymada, a local delicacy from the Philippines.
After many ups, downs, and failures, she served this dish to her family during Sunday lunch, where it received a seal of approval.
In 1994, with the help of her five children and a supportive husband, Mary Grace entered the first market, offering her ensaymadas and cheese rolls. Initially, selling these items was nerve-wracking, as no one had tasted them before. She began by giving out free samples of ensaymada, and gradually, people started enjoying her bakery products.
Bazaars turned out to be very lucrative. Eventually, all of Mary’s children — Gabriel, Chiara, Raffy, Adrian, and Mian — joined the business. From operating stalls in 2002 to establishing more permanence in the market, four years and eleven kiosks later, Mary Grace Café opened in Serendra in 2006.
Today, Mary Grace has 38 kiosks and 44 cafés across the Philippines. Given the company’s growth rate, this number is expected to increase in the future.
