History of Texas Roadhouse
W. Kent Taylor opened the first Texas Roadhouse restaurant on February 17, 1993, in Clarksville, Indiana.
W. Kent Taylor was a resident of Louisville, but while living in Colorado, he worked in nightclubs and restaurants.
In 1990, Taylor returned to his hometown, Louisville, Kentucky. There, he worked as a manager at Kentucky Fried Chicken for a long time.
It was his dream to open a Colorado-themed restaurant. Former Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown, Jr. gave Taylor $80,000 to support him.
Finally, in 1991, Taylor opened the Buckhead Mountain Grill with Brown’s support, but soon complications arose in the business.
That’s why Taylor decided to start a new venture. However, starting a new business requires an investor, and no one wanted to invest in Taylor’s idea.
In 1992, Dr. John Rhodes agreed to invest in Taylor’s concept. Finally, in 1993, the first Texas Roadhouse was opened.
In 1993, Texas Roadhouse opened its second location in Gainesville, Florida. Just one year later, the company opened three more restaurants, but due to poor building locations, all these restaurants had to be closed.
Taylor recognized the mistakes he had made with these three restaurants. That’s why he focused heavily on building design and restaurant décor. After that, the company began expanding rapidly. By 1999, Texas Roadhouse had opened a total of 67 restaurants.
In September 2011, the restaurant chain entered the international market, with the first international location opening in Dubai, UAE.
