History of Whataburger
Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton wanted to open a hamburger restaurant where customers could get a burger big enough to need both hands to hold it and so delicious that, after one bite, people would say, “What a burger!”
This inspired the company name, Whataburger, derived from “What a burger.”
In June 1950, Dobson acquired the Whataburger trademark. Two months later, on August 8, 1950, he opened his first restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas, where burgers sold for 25 cents, with drinks and chips also available on the menu.
In 1952, Whataburger opened its first store outside Corpus Christi in Kingsville.
Until 1958, the chain only operated in Texas, so in 1959, Whataburger opened a restaurant outside Texas in Pensacola, Florida.
By 1960, the company had expanded to Texas, Florida, and Tennessee.
In 1962, French fries and hot pies were added to the fast-food menu. In 1963, the restaurant company also established a presence in Arizona.
By 1965, a total of 26 stores had been opened, increasing to 40 by 1967.
By the end of the 1960s, the company had more than 100 locations. The chain continued expanding rapidly through the 1970s and 1980s.
