The first Denny’s store was opened by Harold Butler and Richard Jezak in 1954 in Lakewood, California under the name Danny’s Donuts.
After Zazak’s departure in 1956, Butler converted the Donuts shop into a coffee shop. And the name of the shop was changed to Danny’s Coffee Shops.
Because there was already a restaurant named Coffee Dan’s. To avoid confusion, Butler changed its name to Denny’s Coffee Shops in 1959.
